It’s easy to get on the bible’s case for it’s messages that are pro-slavery and anti women’s rights. Also for it’s depiction of a god who asks people to kill their sons, mutilate themselves, and gets so angry that he floods the entire planet with no mercy shown to anyone except Noah. But there are so many more things, subtler things, that also call the bible into question as a guide by which anyone should lead their lives. The one that got me today is that God gave man ‘dominion’ over nature. Obviously, we don’t hold dominion over nature. Look at the earthquake in Haiti. Teaching people that they have dominion over nature is at least arrogant, and definitely very, very dangerous. We are nature, we are connected to and are inseparable from it. We must learn about nature, respect its vastness and power, if we ever want to be able to sustain our society.
